Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Desert Farming Initiative is GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) Certified by the USDA. To find farms GAP certified near you or to view our certification, visit the USDA Audit Programs website (click on “locations” near the end of the page).

GAP certification can be a work intensive process, but it doesn’t have to be. We have posted some helpful links that set us in the right direction along with our own Food Safety manual and log sheets that you can copy and apply to your farm.

To start compiling the GAP food safety manual and recorHarvestd keeping, the HDFI consulted the following websites:

When you are ready for your audit, the following audit checklist will be used. In cooperation with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and Cooperative Extension, the DFI offers individual assistance with creating food safety plans and performing mock audits. Please contact Jennifer Ott, jottnv@yahoo.com, to discuss your GAP plans.

The DFI will make available word documents and excel files of all their food safety documents. Below are links to DFI’s food safety manual, logs, and an audit. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to request any specific GAP material.

  • DFI GAP Food Safety Manual & Log Sheets – Each section in the manual contains has its own folder with a written document, living logs (logs we fill out), and master logs (ones we do not edit for copying and printing purposes). The written document outlines our practices, and contains links to log sheets for easy navigation and accessibility. You will also see old versions of documents and logs, which are no longer in use.
