The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Desert Farming Initiative is GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) Certified by the USDA. To find farms GAP certified near you or to view our certification, visit the USDA Audit Programs website (click on “locations” near the end of the page).
GAP certification can be a work intensive process, but it doesn’t have to be. We have posted some helpful links that set us in the right direction along with our own Food Safety manual and log sheets that you can copy and apply to your farm.
- University of Minnesota – Food Safety Plan For You – offers a fill-in-the-blank template
- On Farm Food Safety Project – shows a sample plan and a guide for creating a food safety document
When you are ready for your audit, the following audit checklist will be used. In cooperation with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and Cooperative Extension, the DFI offers individual assistance with creating food safety plans and performing mock audits. Please contact Jennifer Ott, firstname.lastname@example.org, to discuss your GAP plans.
The DFI will make available word documents and excel files of all their food safety documents. Below are links to pdf’s of the DFI food safety manual, example log sheets and example of on-farm signs. Please contact us to receive electronic copies of our GAP files so that you can copy and use portions of documents that would be most useful.
